Getting Making #1

I have started a new project called Getting Making.  My colleague and I are setting a new challenge each week for some MA students at Camberwell to respond to, we are also doing the challenges.  We are meeting over the coming weeks to set the next challenge, and talk through the objects made for the previous challenge.  We are also going to be holding a small exhibition at the end of May to showcase some of the objects.

The image above is of my objects from challenge 1 - to collect 4-6 objects that embody your practice, forming a visual and physical narrative showing your interests.

There are more images here showing the work of some of the other participants.

Exhibition details to be confirmed, but private view will be 23rd May, Camberwell Green

Shop of Possibilities

Last Saturday I spent the afternoon at the Shop of Possibilities (their blog here), a space run by the South London Gallery.  It is a truly amazing space, filled with stuff to make with, stuff to play with and space to do it in.  The unit that houses it is an ex-shop which had apparently been empty for a considerable amount of time before the SLG took over it.  I really enjoyed being there, the staff were very welcoming as were the children.  There were no structured activities, just the freedom to get on and do whatever you fancied.
I played catch with a bunch of the children for a while, and also did some drawing& colouring with them.  I basically joined in with what they wanted to do, and helped when necessary.  I found it very inspiring, it reminded me of bits of my childhood where we always had a box of milk tops, loo roll tubes, old paper and other bits, glue, paint and sellotape to play and make with, and complete freedom to make whatever we wanted.
I really liked that it was unstructured too - there was space for everyone to do what they wanted, inside or out, sitting and drawing or running and bouncing.

The Geometrics

My work will be featured in this exhibition next month
20/4/13 - 5/5/13

The Geometrics: Volume 1 showcases a new chapter in British textiles –
their meaning, possibility, diversity and reach. In the first of a series of
exhibitions, Volume 1 focuses on the interface between fine art,
film and fashion.
Geometrics have always been central to populist textile design, from Aztec
weave and Xhosa beadwork to Sonia Delaunay knit and Jonathan Saunders
print. The Geometrics: Volume 1 works this rich legacy into present day
processes, media and methods. Html patchwork, Nbedele-inspired plastics,
geometric performance gifs, embroidered wood, lazercut laminates and
open source design: this is contemporary British textiles, new media,
new language, new meaning.
The artists are a group of emerging practitioners and design activists
specializing in tactile mathematical form, pattern, structure and narrative.
The majority of them trained at the Royal College of Art and Chelsea College
of Art & Design and invite study in their own right.
A dynamic and inspiring public programme of events, workshops and
a one-day symposium accompany the exhibition. The Geometrics:
Volume 1 book is also launched outlining the artists working processes
and focus on geometrics.
